My name is Britney and this all began in 2014. I was newly married and reflecting on the wedding planning process that my partner, Gregory, and I had just experienced. The process was exciting because it was new and surrounded by love and possibility but I truly had zero idea what it meant to plan a wedding. There is much to learn in such little time and it goes far beyond linens, and colour schemes.
One of the biggest factors that stood out to me was the amount of waste that is considered to be “normal” for an average wedding.
To put this in perspective, there are thousands and thousands of weddings each year and many of these wedding include elaborate and excessive events/products which produce an alarmingly large carbon footprint. I found this information shocking and so I decided to do something about the problem.
This is where Eco Bride Project began. I started this blog in the spring of 2015 with the hopes of inspiring readers to plan greener weddings and teach readers that a green wedding doesn’t mean you sacrifice an amazing day—this is not an “either or” situation. You can have both the beautiful day and the green wedding. I successfully planned and enjoyed my own Green Wedding in the summer of 2014 and I want to teach and inspire people to have the Weddings of their dreams while simultaneously reducing the size of carbon footprint that the celebration leaves behind.
A blog seemed like the perfect outlet for these ideas. I had recently graduated with my BA degree where I honed new research and writing skills. I majored in Psychology and minored in English Literature. Then in October of 2015 I decided to amp up my knowledge of the wedding industry and became a certified Wedding Planner with WPIC and July 2016 I found a course on green wedding planning and earned a certificate as a Green Wedding Planner. Whether I’m enrolled in formal education or learning from the world around me I’m always absorbing information and my hope is to continuously teach and learn.
Again, this expanded and I branched off into a new category. In February of 2016 one of my best friends was getting married and another friend and I were going to do a toast together. I had never written a maid of honour speech but the words easily flowed and I had a speech that I was proud to read.
After the wedding when I was reflecting on the process I suddenly got an idea. I had heard people complain about writing maid of honour and best man speeches at every wedding I had been to (and I had heard some terrible speeches in the past) and I realized that people might be willing to pay to have someone provide this service for them.
In April of 2016 I decided to try an experiment and opened an Etsy shop. I put up a single listing for a custom wedding speech and waited to see what happened. I sold two in a month and realized that this was a legitimate market and that I was good at filling this need. In August of 2016 I officially started my wedding planning business where I specialized in wedding speeches.
I am again feeling a call to step out of my comfort zone and am planning a new project that will be featured on this website called “A Year to Change my Life.” In this series I’ll be highlighting books, experiences, and adventures (good and bad) as I try to find a way to balance my desire for a creative life as an entrepreneur. Along with this new project, Eco Bride Project is still dedicated to eco friendly ideas, products, and vendors and I will still be writing on these topics, along with continuing to run my little Etsy shop.
Here’s to the next chapter!
